It works through what is called a photochemical effect, the same kind of process that lets plants use sunlight. When cells are stressed by injury or disease, the mitochondria (the part of the cell where energy is produced) can build up harmful nitric oxide, which pushes needed oxygen out of the cells and leads to inflammation or cell death. When the tissue absorbs light from the low-level laser, that nitric oxide is released, oxygen flows back into the cells, and normal cell function can be restored. The light is also believed to support cell regeneration and help balance the body's natural healing response.
